Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

1Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

Let’s start off with the best. Thankfully, I still have the majority of my original edition turtles. Released in 1987, every kid had one. Plus, there were so many toys and characters in this line, it was insanely fun to get them all.

Depending on the character and condition, these toys are worth $550-$5,000 today.

Megatron Gun

Today, a toy like this would never exist, but the 80’s were a different time. You could get away with shit like this. This toy was Megatron’s gun form and could be both robot and weapon. It was soon recalled, because of obvious reasons, and is now a rare item.

An original, mint-in-box recently sold at auction for $4,000.

Jem & The Holograms Dolls

Not technically an action figure, but close enough. This show had powerful fandom back in the 80’s, and all the girls in my class were obsessed with the dolls and their accessories.

While they’re not the most mainstream, a good condition doll will fetch you at least $700+.

U.S.S. Flagg

Though not an action figure, it was a playset, and one that I desperately wanted, but never got. Released in 1986, this aircraft carrier for your Joes cost $90, which wasn’t cheap for 80’s prices. It was only in production for a year, before Hasbro discontinued it.

If you find a decent condition one, or even a mint-in-box, the price point starts at $1,000 and goes from there.

Michael Jackson ‘Superstar of the 80’s’ doll

This was back at the height of his popularity and every kid wanted a Michael Jackson doll. There were several editions, with all of his iconic costumes from the time. This one, however, was the most popular and rare.

Good condition dolls have gotten at least $250, which isn’t too shabby.

G.I. Joe “Breaker”

6Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

There were countless figures released in the G.I.Joe line over the years, but in 1982, they debuted the 3.75 inch figures, which made the toys easier to get. Priced at $2, this was how we all got our large collections of Joes. Despite being mass produced, however, this figure is a rarity and is sought after by collectors.

If you have one, you can easily get at least $250 for it, if not more.

Sise Fromm (Droids)

7Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

What makes the Star Wars franchise so lucrative, are the toys. Seen as a partial failure now, there were two series’ in the 80/90’s that tried to keep the momentum going. Both Droids & Ewoks were decent pieces of animation, but the toys are what all the kids wanted. This future of the villain from Droids was exceptionally popular.

He was also really rare, so his figure will run you $1,000 for a mint condition.

She-Ra and Swiftwind

8Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

Back in the day, the combo packs of action figures were the way to go. You could add to your collection, and it was reasonably priced. After the success of Masters of the Universe, Mattel wanted to build a brand aimed at girls and get them into the same fantasy world. So they came up with He-Man’s cousin, She-Ra and her noble Pegasus horse – Swiftwind. Sold as a combo pack, it was a slam dunk.

If you still have this combo set lying around in mint condition, you’ll be looking at a $2,000 payday.

Wun-Dar He-Man

9Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

If you ever wanted a He-Man, but were thrown off by the blonde hair, then know that there was once a brunette option. There’s some debate over here this guy came from though. Some accounts say that if you bought 3 figures and sent in their barcodes, you’d get this mail-only He-Man variant. Others say that this was a promotion with Wonder Bread.

Either way, he fetches roughly $1,000 if you’ve got him in your basement.

1978 Darth Vader

10Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

This early edition of the big bad himself was notable because he had a telescoping lightsaber that came out of his arm. When it first came out, however, not a lot of people were into the functionality of the weapon, and it was discontinued. This made it super rare.

If you happen to find a mint condition of this figure, it’ll net you up to $6,000 easily.

G.I. Joe Battle Tank

11Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

While the Joes were huge in the 80’s, the figures weren’t the biggest deal – they were a dime a dozen. It was all the vehicles that were amazing. This tank launched in 1982, and came with the Steeler figure, who didn’t have bendable elbows. This made him and his tank super rare.

If you have an original model, with the original Steeler, you’re looking at $1,000 worth of “Go Joes!”

Vinyl cape Jawas

12Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

As soon as these guys showed up in Episode IV, everyone wanted one. Originally, the prototype of the toy had a cloth cape and was sold briefly. They then switched that out for a vinyl cape, making the first round of production exceptionally rare.

The current day value of a cloth-caped Jawa is upwards of $18,000.

He-Man & Battle Cat set

13Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

The Masters of the Universe set was wildly popular. Every kid had a figure, and we’d all play fight with them in the schoolyard. Back in the 80’s, you could buy He-Man, or his cat individually, but the super-rare combo pack was where it was at.

This one currently goes for $4,000 in mint condition.

Mego Elastic Batman

14Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

In the early 80’s, a company called Mego Corporation released this stretchy toy. Since it was a blatant rip-off of Kenner’s Stretch Armstrong, they got sued, and halted production. It’s believed that there’s only a handful of these guys out in the world, so rare doesn’t even begin to describe it.

At the moment, the current price is estimated at around $15,000.

Transformers Generation 1

15Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

These were the other huge toys from my childhood, and I know I couldn’t collect them fast enough. Individually, the toys are all worth something, and have a good return on investment. The real value, however, is if you have the complete set of Generation 1.

In a recent auction of an entire collection, the final price was somewhere upwards of $40,000.

Raiders of the Lost Ark Playset

16Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

Though not an action figure, per se, but a playset, this one is super rare. Released 2 years after the film, the “well of souls” playset had poor sales and was quickly cancelled.

That means that a mint-edition of this set went for $2,000. I’d drop that to play with this. It’s pretty awesome.

1978 Obi Wan Kenobi figure

17Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

Of course, there would need to be more Star Wars figures on this list, because they were the epitome of awesome 80’s toys. This one for the original line had the telescoping lightsaber that came out of his arm.

Out of the box, this figure could run you at least $2,000, but a mint-in-the-box edition would get you upwards of $6,000.

The Real Ghostbusters Venkman figure

18Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

I can proudly say, that I still own this guy! While there were so many different varieties of figures from The Real Ghostbusters, the most valuable ones seem to be the Fright Features line, where you’d push their arm and their eyes would bug out.

Recently, the Venkman figure sold on eBay for over $1,000. Hope my mom doesn’t see this post and sell my guy for bingo money, before I get there.

Boba Fett (Droids)

19Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

Despite his limited screen time, Boba Fett is a popular badass. His popularity translated over to the Droids tv show and garnered him a specific action figure.

If you’ve got this one lying in your mom’s basement, still in it’s packaging, you can get at least $1,000 for it.

Thunderings Lion-O

20Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

In the 80’s, one of the most common things to see was when a toy line started to see a decline in sales, they’d release some gimmicky toys. Think Malibu Stacey with a hat, or the TMNT Star Trek line. This was specifically the case with Thundercats. Towards the end of their popularity, a set of Thunderwings figures was released, allowing the Thundercats to fly. The prize of the collection was, of course, Lion-O.

A loose version of the figure will get you close to $500, but a graded, mint-in-box, can go for upwards of $1,000.

Any other Kenner Boba Fett figure

21Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

This guy was one of the most in-demand figures in the 80’s, with many editions that were limited, cancelled and just super rare.

If you had any variation of Boba Fett sitting in your grandmothers basement, you could find yourself $2,000-$5,000 richer by selling it.

1982 edition Skeletor

22Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

When this line was released in 1982, it took our imaginations by storm, and Skeletor became one of our favourite villains. Remember that cackle? I loved it! Even today, collectors will still shell out huge bucks to collect the original toys. Plus, his battle panther, was super fuzzy, which made him even more desirable.

This edition of Skeletor can easily fetch upwards of $1,500 at auction.

Masters of the Universe Eternia Playset

23Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

Back then, it was all about the Playsets. What good was it to have the toys, if you couldn’t reenact your favourite scenes in context? This was the “Holy Grail” of toys for the line and was highly sought.

Currently, if you have a mint-in-box set, it’ll get you over $2,000.

The original Optimus Prime

24Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

You’d think that this would be a popular and easy to find toy, based on how awesome it is, but there’s a catch. Yes, there are tons of OP toys from the 80’s floating around, but the very first edition was far more complicated than the rest of the toys in the line.

An original, mint-in-box will easily net you upwards of $10,000.

A 1978 Luky Skywalker figure

25Who Would’ve Known That Action Figures From The 80’s Would Be So Valuable Nowadays

If there’s gonna be an 80’s toy that super pricey, it’s gonna be a) a Star Wars one and b) it’s gonna be Luke. While the figure isn’t necessarily rare, it’s rare to find an unopened one. At the moment, there are only 20 in existence that are pristine and mint.

In a 2015 auction, this exact figure sold for $25,000, and it was part of an entire Star Wars collection that went for a total of $500,000.
