These Console Games Are Almost Perfect (23 pics)
Metacritic has rounded up console games with highest average scores, and most of them are simply legendary.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)
Score: 95%

This is the first GTA game that really got it right, and the targeting system is sublime, the social commentary is sharp as fuck and the open world is still something that people nostalgically wander to this day. Ah, the memories.
BioShock (Xbox)
Score: 96%

Nothing beats that first glimpse of Rapture, and the game is just so gorgeously plotted. It also has the perfect balance between exploration and action, and that’s why it’s in the gaming hall of fame.
GoldenEye 007 (N64)
Score: 96%
3
This is the ultimate James Bond game and is the reason why N64 was so successful. Plus, nothing beats the multiplayer of this game for its awesome factor.
Nothing.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
Score: 96%
4
This game is so fast paced and full of action, that it’s feels more like a movie than a game. Plus, the graphics and gamplay still hold up today.
Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)
Score: 96%
5
This game is a masterpiece in storytelling – it’s chilling and action-filled. Plus, it still looks fantastic.
Batman: Arkham City (PS3)
Score: 96%
6
Arkham Asylum was the best game of all time, in my opinion, and this sequel built on that foundation by giving us free reign of Gotham City. The gameplay rocks, the graphics are fantastic, and the story will kick you right in your bat-utility-belt of feelings.
Tekken 3(PS)
Score: 96%
7
This game might seem dated, at first, but it was a monster on the arcade scene. When ported to home consoles, somehow, it got better. What makes it so popular, are the sheer number of moves and combos each player has, and it’s a fun-as-fuck fighting game.
Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360)
Score: 96%
8
This is the pinnacle of the series. The gameplay is solid, the pacing is perfect and the game is considered by most fans, one of the best in the franchise.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GameCube)
Score: 96%
9
This game was Nintendo’s response to the oft-asked question from fans: “Can we get a more mature version of Link?” This game is lovingly-crafted and incredibly creative. If you haven’t had a chance to play it, don’t miss out; it’s gorgeous.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360)
Score: 96%
10
Despite its age, this game is still being played by thousands. Revolutionary when it came out, it’s now the domain of models who keep the world up to date and fresh.
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube)
Score: 96%
11
This open-world edition was give some mockery for its cartoonish style at launch, but it’s aged incredibly well. It’s like a warm hug from your console when you play this fun game.
Gran Turismo (PS)
Score: 96%
12
Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 (Wii)
Score: 97%
13
Both games were a breath of fresh air on the Wii and insanely fun. They were so brightly coloured and creative, these were the perfect games to just play and zone out when you’re feeling meh.
Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One)
Score: 97%
14
This game nailed it with it’s graphics and first-person view. It’s easily the best of the series and the multiplayer takes you to a whole new level of awesome.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (PS2)
Score: 97%
15
What made this game so fantastic, was the ability to challenge another player online. Plus, being able to literally skate off anything in the environments, made this a gnarly game.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Score: 97%
16
The latest Zelda game is already up there in terms of perfection. The open-world means you can literally do anything you want, and makes this the best game of the decade, hands down.
Perfect Dark (N64)
Score: 97%
17
Other than GoldenEye, this is the other FPS of that era that absolutely dominated. The graphics were amazing, the Dolby sound was immersive and the story was pretty engaging. Who doesn’t love hot secret agents and aliens?
Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
Score: 97%
18
This game puts fun at the forefront of it’s identity, and I love that. It’s like the developers at Nintendo just wanted to make our wildest Mario dreams come true, and just let it happen. IT’s amazing.
Metroid Prime (GameCube)
Score: 97%
19
This game was absolutely sublime, and was a game-changer for the franchise. The first foray into 3D FPS made this game a must play for Metroid fans.
Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
Score: 97%
20
This franchise brought something to gaming that no one had ever seen before, and was so ahead of it’s time when it dropped. This game is nearly perfect because of it’s attention to detail and gorgeous scenery.
SoulCalibur (DreamCast)
Score: 98%
21
This game was really the only reason why anyone would by the DreamCast. For what it’s worth, it’s a really good fighting game, with an engaging storyline and fascinating fighters.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox One)
Score: 98%
22
This game literally just dropped, and it’s already practically considered one of the most perfect games of all time. Can’t say I disagree. The visuals and gameplay of this game blow my mind, they’re so stunning.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Score: 99%
23
Both the playing public and critics can’t say enough good stuff about this game. Over time, the legend of it has grown, and it’s due to the story, the large world and the sound design. It’s so immersive that it’s only when you hit ‘quit,’ that you realize you’re not actually living in Hyrule.
